Menstrual and female health
How smoothly our menstrual cycle flows, or doesn’t as the case may be, can be an indication of our overall emotional wellbeing and hormone health. Menstrual dysfunction, including PCOS, endometriosis, painful periods and PMS, to name but a few, are commonly seen symptoms in clinical practice. If any of these conditions resonate with you, it may be a sign that your hormones are out of balance, and perhaps stress is present in your life.

An average healthy menstrual cycle is typically 29 days, with menstruation lasting between 3 to 5 days. The flow should be not overly light or heavy, with minimal discomfort or pain, and the blood a fresh colour, not overly dark or clotted. Pre-menstrual symptoms, such as bloating, breast tenderness and mood swings should be minimal. Ideally there will be a smooth transition between all the phases of the menstrual cycle, with no see-sawing of emotions or symptoms.

As women we spend the Spring and Summer seasons of our lives, almost half of our life expectancy, living with the cycles of menstruation and all that that brings. Alongside these internal cycles, our external challenges can add extra pressure, Life can be busy or fraught with transitions of big change, such as leaving home, careers, relationships and perhaps raising families. The challenges of modern day lifestyles can be very different to that of our ancestors, and it's perhaps no surprise that our menstrual health can suffer as a result.

Person centred approach
Traditional Chinese medicine, including acupuncture, herbal medicine and reflexology, can offer a holistic approach for female health support. It sees each person as a unique individual, not a disease or condition. It looks at both the symptoms and the root cause, treating the person as whole. One of the key features is a system of pattern differentiation, a comprehensive framework used to diagnose and formulate treatment strategies. By promoting balance, enhancing overall wellbeing, and addressing both physical and emotional factors, these ancient practices can provide valuable assistance for female health.
How we can support you
Whether you are looking to facilitate a healthy menstrual flow, finding overall balance, seeking support for a particular symptom, or a combination of all of these, we may be able to help.

One of the primary ways acupuncture and herbal medicine may benefit female health is by assisting with a smooth menstrual flow. We will work with you at each stage of the menstrual cycle and adjust each treatment, or herbal formula, accordingly. The aim is to help balance follicular and luteal phases, regulate emotions and encourage a healthy menstrual flow. Acupuncture and herbal medicine can support the menstrual cycle by promoting the flow of qi and blood, thereby encouraging regular periods, and reducing pain and discomfort. It may also assist emotional balance, reducing the symptoms of PMS.

At the initial consultation we take a closer look at all aspects of your life and health, both physical and emotional. We explore which areas may be affecting your health, and from this create a treatment plan. You have the option to select acupuncture, herbal medicine, reflexology, lifestyle guidance, or a combination of those treatments. If you have already chosen a specific form of treatment, we will proceed accordingly. However, if you are uncertain, our practitioner can provide expert advice tailored to your unique needs and requirements.

For those wishing to explore a little deeper a bespoke package of treatments can be discussed. Bespoke packages provide the opportunity to explore in more detail beneficial ways to help yourself, such as addressing lifestyle choices which may not be serving you well, include providing dietary wisdom using the principles of Chinese nutritional therapy, and self-care practices to help improve wellbeing.
